Curry: What’s it all about?

Whilst many think that curry only comes from a couple of places, you can find many countries trying to put their own stamp on the dish. It’s not just China and India, but Thailand, Mexico and West Indies. Each curry has its own identity that compliments main dishes; fish, chicken, lamb, beef, rice and many more. Curry originates from India and is a mixture of spices from 5 or more, depending on what the type of curry and heat that you want. The main bases of curry powder are:

  • Nutmeg

  • Cumin

  • Coriander

  • Ginger

  • Turmeric

  • Paprika

  • Many more

There are many benefits to curry that are well known. Curry spice, turmeric and cumin have been classed as medicine for more than 2500 years. The yellow spice is believed to prevent digestive cancer as well as improve brain health. In many studies Curumin is an anti-toxin and anti-inflammatory, which has huge health benefits. We know how important protein is in our diets; Cumin exerts an increase in protein levels.

The curry plant is a shrub and usually grows up to 6 metres; the plant is usually found in the hottest parts of India. The leaves themselves contain iron, calcium, and phosphorous as well as fibres, proteins and carbohydrates. The leaves help to flush out fats within our bodies and can help reduce cholesterol. They have been known to help treat burns and insect bites. There are so many benefits within curry.

However, we can’t forget about the great taste of a good curry. Whether you opt for a Biryani, Bhuna or Tikka Massala, heat things up with a Vindaloo or Madras, or try some of the less well known dishes such as Achar, and Adrak, you’re sure to delight your palate. Choose from chicken, lamb, beef or prawn if you wish, and experience the difference in taste of combining with different meats or fishes.

Curries are not only for the meat and fish lovers, vegetarians now can enjoy the mouth watering tastes of a curry dish. Some choices of vegetarian curries:
